“Most of the information we have about risks comes to us by way ofthe mass media. But it does not, for the most part, come as explicitreporting about “risk.” Instead, most reporting about hazards and theirassociated risks comes in the guise of news and feature stories aboutaccidents, illnesses, natural disasters, and scientific breakthroughs.

What is it, then, that the average reader or viewer would learn fromthe way hazards and their associated risks are selected and presented bythe media?
