“Media serving the public interest are essential before, during and in the aftermath of a disaster, regardless the distribution platform(s) they operate on, and remain strong in areas with limited access to the internet or low literacy rates. They serve as a lifeline, providing reliable information and connecting communities. By highlighting the needs of affected populations and exposing any shortcomings in the response, media can help to ensure that people receive timely support and hold authorities and aid agencies accountable. Media can also provide an arena for affected populations to participate in public debates around post-disaster issues and offer psychosocial support or other critical, educational or health coverage and even entertainment.”
